Professor Noh Young-kyun

Noh Young-kyun, a professor of computer software engineering at Hanyang University, co-developed an age group estimation technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) on the 21st with Lee Yeon-hee, a professor of oral medicine at the Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital. The technology is expected to be able to quickly identify the dead in the event of a massive disaster.

This study is significant as it is the world's first study to estimate the age groups by applying convolutional neural networks (CNN), a type of artificial intelligence deep learning, to panoramic radiation images of the first large-gauge region of existing people. The research team significantly increased the accuracy when the amount of input information was increased by using all four information, instead of using 1, at the same time. In addition, the age estimation methods that have been implemented so far have been highly error-prone and time-consuming, but they were able to secure accuracy and increase the speed through automated processes through artificial intelligence.

The research supported by the National Research Foundations and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy was published in the January edition of Scientific Reports, an international journal. The research paper is 'Age-group determination of living individuals using first molar images based on artificial intelligence.'
