On the August 7th, professor Moon Hee-chan's research team at the Department of Electornic Engineering developed a techonology that can accurately nagivate mobile phones solely via mobile communication signals.

Currently, it is impossible to accurately navigate models that do not support Wi-Fi and GPS (including some resale phones, old feature phones, and foreign phones). Recently, there was an incident that police could not trace the location of a report even though a person reported 112 emergency number via his MVNO phone in an emergency, thus failed to stop casualties.

In addition, current 112 location tracking technology has a maximum location error of 2km, and satellite GPS has its shortcomings in not operating in buildings.

The research team's technology can identify the location of all mobile which is capable of calling within a horizontal positioning error range of 10m and a vertical positioning error range of 1.5m without Wi-Fi or satelite GPS signals. In other words, it is possible to find out the person in emergency's building location, floor number, and even their room number.

Professor Moon said, "If this techonology successfully is deployed on a commercical scale, it is expected to increase the success rate of location identification, thus bringing a breakthrough in the practice of emergency rescue activities."

Professor Moon received the original patent for the techonlogy (a mobile terminal positioning system) from the U.S. Patent Office.

Meanwhile, professor Moon is shceudled to demonstrate the related technology at 2pm on the August 9th at Hanyang Univeristy Seoul Campus Industrial Center Main Building Room 503.
