To train professionals in the battery field which is considered as a key component in 21st century economics and industry, Hanyang University signed an industry-university cooperation agreement with LG Energy Solution and SK On. As a background to the agreement between two companies and Hanyang University, there is a shortage of battery professionals. According to the Korea Battery Industry Association, as of the end of 2020, 21% of the master degree and 25% of the doctorate degree is in shortage.

At the agreement ceremony which was held in June 22 afternoon at Seoul Campus, Seongdong-gu Seoul, major officials including the CTO of LG Energy Solution Shin Young-Jun, the director of SK On battery research center Lee Jang-Won, and Oh Seong-Geun Executive Vice president of Business. 

Due to the agreement, Hanyang University newly estabilishes Battery Engineering(40 personnel quota) at graduate school and selects superb talent among students as industry-university scholarship student. The selected students will take a tailored battery track degree course developed by Hanyang University and two companies and will be trained as a professional with battery related expertise and operational knowledge. Moreover, the students will receive tuition fee and scholarship from the university and two companies, as well as be employed to the company as soon as their degree acquisition.

The Executive Vice President Oh Seong-Geun said “Even though the battery industry is developing in rapid pace, there is a shortage of professionals compared to the size of the market” adding “We will train the greatest talents on battery with the greatest battery industries in the world.”

Lee Jang-Won, the director of SK On battery research center, said “SK ON has led the global battery market based on great human resources like developing high-nickel battery” with that “We will keep trying our best to train excellent talents who can improve the competency of Korean battery.”

Shin Young-Jun, the CTO of LG Energy Solution said that “We are expecting to strengthen our competency as leader company of global battery market by training and retaining great talents in the rechargeable battery field”, adding that “We will fully support so that Department of Battery Engineering in Hanyang University can be the best educational institution for talents on battery field.”
