An honorary doctorate in engineering was awarded to Chun Kyung-joon (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Class of 66’), Chairman of Seegene Inc., on the 6th floor of the New Administration building, in September 2. 

Hanyang University awarded Chairman Chun Kyung-joon an honorary doctorate in engineering in recognition of his contribution to the mobile phones' popularization by leading the development of Anycall in Samsung Electronics Co. and contribution to Hanyang such as scholarships and donations to fund the construction of the Electronics Center.

Chairman Chun Kyung-joon entered the Department of Electronic Engineering at Hanyang University’s College of Engineering in the year 1966, graduated in 1970, and joined Korea Telecommunications (KTC) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. In 1989, he became the Director of Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Research Center, led the development of domestic mobile phones, and succeeded in developing Anycall, which defeated Motorola for the first time in the world in 1993. Since then, the era of popularization of Korean mobile phones has begun, being commercialized of the world’s first CDMA mobile communication service. He received the Presidential award for Korea’s becoming the world’s No. 1 exporter of mobile phones and smartphones.

In addition, in 2000, he provided full funding for the foundation of Seegene Inc., a bio-venture, and grew the company with support for operating funds and management guidance after its has been established. Especially, he contributed to the COVID-19 crisis response of Korea and the world, developing its own COVID-19 diagnostic kit. 

Chairman Kim Jong-ryang said, “The honorary doctorate is presented as an evaluation of a person’s life,” adding, “Chairman Chun Kyung-joon’s efforts have become the cornerstone of Korea, a Mobile Powerhouse.” while sending his congratulations. 

Professor Moon Hi-chan of Hanyang University said, “Chairman Chun Kyung-joon is a benefactor of my life,” adding, “I learned greatly from Chairman Chun Kyung-joon while working at Samsung Electronics, and it is due to him I was able to be here.” “I sincerely congratulate Chairman Chun Kyung-joon on his award earning in honorary doctorate,” he said. 

Chairman Chun Kyung-joon said, “I am very pleased to receive an honorary doctorate with my fellow friends who were devoted to the development of Anycall and CDMA services and worked day and night alongside me,” adding, “I hope Korea will continue to explore high value-added industries and achieve continuous growth.”
